What are the appliances used for orthodontic treatment?
Fixed appliances
These are the most common appliances used for the treatment. These are fixed to the teeth and are removed after the completion of the treatment. The most common fixed orthodontic appliances are Braces
Braces consist of brackets, wires, bands, and loops. The brackets are fixed to the front of the teeth and the wire passes through the brackets. Pressure is applied to the teeth by tightening the wires.
The patient has to visit every month for adjustment of the pressure and also to regulate the movement of the teeth.
The different types of braces are:
Metal braces system: Here all the parts like brackets, wire, etc are made up of metal.
Ceramic braces system: The brackets are made up of ceramic and clear wire is used. They are aesthetically more appealing.
Removable appliances
These appliances can be removed by the patients. The various removable appliances are:
Habit breaking appliances: These are used to correct minor teeth problems due to thumb sucking or lip biting in the early stages of childhood.
Invisalign: These are clear aligners that are used in adult patients. They are not visible and can be worn by the patients and can be removed while eating or for cleaning purposes.
Expansion plates: Usually given in adolescence to expand the bone while it’s still growing and make space for the teeth.
Headgear: This is given to slow down the growth of the upper jaw. It has a strap that goes at the back of the head and a metal wire or face bow in the front.
Chin cap: Chin cap is given to restrict the forward growth of the lower jaws.
What are the various conditions that can be treated with the help of orthodontic treatment?
- Protrusion or retrusion of the teeth: When the front teeth are placed far too ahead they are called protruded and when the anterior teeth are placed too inside this condition is known as retruded teeth. Both these conditions can be treated with the help of orthodontic treatment.
- Spacing in the teeth
- Crowding of the teeth
- Crossbite: In a normal jaw relation, the upper jaw is placed ahead of the lower jaw, but in a crossbite, the lower teeth overlap the upper teeth. This can cause severe trauma and can lead to mobility of the teeth.
- Overbite: The upper teeth cover the lower teeth far too much. This causes trauma to the lower gums and lips.
- Openbite: The upper and lower front teeth do not occlude at all and there is a huge space between the teeth in the resting position. The patient cannot bite from the front teeth and there is difficulty in closing the lips as well.
What is the time duration of the orthodontic treatment?
It varies for every case. The orthodontic treatment can take anywhere between 1-3 years. It depends upon:
The severity of the problem
Age of the patient: Young patients take lesser time to get treated due to continuous bone remodeling.
Patient’s dedication towards the treatment: Orthodontic treatment requires a visit every month and hence the patient has to be consistent with the treatment so that it can be finished in the designated time
How painful is the orthodontic treatment?
The wires need adjustments every month. To achieve the desired pressure to move the tooth, wires are tightened and this can cause some discomfort to the patient that lasts for a day or two.
What are the food restrictions to be followed?
If you opt for the fixed orthodontic treatment then a few food restrictions need to be followed. You have to avoid food like:
- Sticky foods like caramel, cheese, etc.
- Very hard food
I am into sports, Can I still get braces?
Yes, we deliver a protective mouth shield to all our patients who play sports and have a possibility of facial injury. This mouth shield can be worn over the braces to avoid any damage to the soft tissues in case of an injury.
My doctor has suggested me an orthodontic treatment but I do not have any problem with my appearance. What if I do not undergo the said treatment?
Orthodontic treatment not only improves the appearance but also the functionality of the dentition. If you do not undergo an orthodontic treatment if advised then you can have:
- Difficulty in cleaning the teeth and consequent plaque accumulation.
- A possibly reduced biting efficiency
- High caries
